Learning Through Experience

Our Breadwinners Riser Graduate

Housing Plus was delighted to attend the graduation of one of our young people from the Breadwinners Risers Programme, designed to help gain experience by working as Market Stall Assistants and through 1:1 mentoring.

Their graduation marks significant personal development, dedication and commitment, including completing training and working on a stall every Sunday.

During his graduation acceptance speech, the young person took a moment to thank HP for the encouragement and support he had received. It was a powerful reminder of how opportunities, guidance and belief can help young people develop confidence, skills and ambition.

Fire Brigade Visit

A visit to the local fire station gave young people practical insight into fire safety and emergency response, and they also learned about careers in the service. Firefighters demonstrated what to do in the event of a fire at home, how emergency calls are handled, and how quickly fires can spread, particularly those involving e-bikes and e-scooters.

The young people were also challenged to put on full protective gear as fast as firefighters do when responding to an emergency call.

Then the station alarm sounded, and the group saw firefighters spring into action to respond to a real incident!

Keeping Safe Police Workshop

HP maintains strong relationships with local Police Community Support Officers, who recently visited to help our young people understand how to keep themselves safe and avoid exploitation or harm.

The session included recognising unsafe situations, understanding legal rights, and the stop-and-search process. It also introduced young people to career opportunities in policing. Engaging thoughtfully, the young people clearly appreciated the opportunity to speak openly with officers from their local community.
