Rising up and reaching back
From Language Barriers to Lift-Off
A journey from fear to purpose – built on belief, care, and the right support.
I was supported by Housing Plus when I arrived in the UK as an unaccompanied young person. I think we were very lucky to be placed with Chris and his team; he is kind, wise, and deeply caring – someone who always gave his time and energy to help us feel safe, supported, and hopeful.
When I came to Housing Plus, I was new to the country, alone, and didn’t know where to start. I felt confused, unsure, and worried about my future. The team at Housing Plus supported me with my education, daily needs, and gave me a safe place to live.
They also helped me grow more confident and independent. Chris went with me to the very first college for me to learn English and then to the last college, from where I went to university to study aerospace engineering. Housing Plus encouraged me to continue with my studies and supported me in finding the right course for my future.
I remember having friendly chats with my key workers, getting help with college applications, and feeling like someone believed in me. That made a big difference. I also remember they took me to my very first dentist appointment, which I needed as my teeth were hurting and needed a good fix!
Although I graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering, I currently work for an organisation that supports young people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds with their education. I also work with many children in schools who are at risk of exclusion or are disengaged and dealing with behaviour challenges.
Housing Plus gave me the foundation and support I needed when I had no one else. My time there was supportive and life-changing. They helped me feel safe, cared for, and hopeful and I always tell others that they truly make a difference in young people’s lives.
