To mark World Water Day, Housing Plus hosted an in-house enrichment session focused on the global importance of water and the need to protect this vital resource. The session aimed to raise awareness among young people about how water connects us all and why conservation matters, both locally and globally.
The group began by exploring the challenges that millions of people face in accessing clean water. Through discussion and video clips, they learned about the far-reaching effects of water scarcity on health, education and daily life. Staff encouraged everyone to think about how their own water use affects the environment, and how small changes in daily habits can contribute to a more sustainable future.
A highlight of the session was a hands-on water filtration demonstration. Staff guided the young people in building a basic filter using household materials like cotton wool, sand and plastic bottles. Step by step, they watched murky water pass through the filter and become visibly clearer.
“It was so cool to see dirty water turn clear,” said one young person. “I didn’t know how filters worked before!”
For many in the group, the session struck a personal chord. Several young people come from regions where clean water is not always guaranteed, and the activity prompted thoughtful conversations about those experiences.
By the end of the session, the group had not only gained practical science knowledge but also a renewed appreciation for something that is often taken for granted. It was a meaningful reminder of how learning and reflection can help build awareness and empathy.
