International Women’s Day
HP looks after many young men and strives to promote equality in the face of a rising tide of ‘toxic-masculinity’ in the world. We were therefore delighted by how enthusiastically they embraced our International Women’s activities, a combination of reflective activities designed to celebrate women’s achievements and encourage meaningful discussion.
Staff organised tours across the houses, with profiles of inspirational women on the doors throughout the homes. As the young people viewed the displays, staff spoke with them about the significance of these figures and why their contributions continue to be celebrated today. Among those highlighted were Katherine Johnson, whose work was crucial to early US space missions, and Marie Curie, whose groundbreaking scientific discoveries transformed modern physics and medicine.

The young people also participated in a card-making workshop and reflective discussion. Each read a short biography of an influential woman before the group spoke about their achievements and the barriers many had overcome. The young people then reflected on the women in their lives who have supported them. Many chose to write thank-you cards to mothers, teachers, relatives and mentors, recognising the encouragement and guidance they had received.

The session provided an opportunity to learn about important historical figures and to reflect on respect, appreciation and the positive role that supportive relationships play in people’s lives.
