HP constantly strives through its Against Cultural Poverty initiative to give the young people in its care opportunities enjoyed by more privileged peers, to help them build ‘cultural capital’. The team identified an opportunity for the young people to attend a residential at Cambridge University, including meeting and debating with current students. Other activities included college campus tours, punting on the river, visiting historic chapels, dining in college halls, and exploring the Cambridge Botanic Gardens.

At the gardens, one young person was so captivated by the diversity of plants and the calm atmosphere that they expressed a new career ambition: to study botany. A simple walk among flowers and trees has opened up a whole new path for their future; proof of just how life-changing these opportunities can be.
